Southwest Sports Medicine
Southwest Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics is a sports medicine & orthopedic clinic located in Waco, TX, dedicated to meeting the medical needs of athletes and active adults of all ages in the Central Texas community. In addition to being the Team Physicians for Baylor Athletics, Southwest Sports Medicine works with junior colleges and high schools all over the Central Texas community. Our staff consists of American Board of Orthopedic Surgery Certified Surgeons, specialty orthopedic surgeons, and primary care sports medicine specialists.
Southwest Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics was founded in 2003 by Jon M. Ellis, M.D.
Since opening the doors the practice has grown with physicians, physician assistants, and athletic trainers. In 2009 Southwest Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics became the Team Physicians for Baylor Athletics.
Specialties range from primary care sports medicine, orthopedic sports medicine, hand/wrist & elbow, foot/ankle, total joint reconstruction, and an orthopedic spine.
The team at Southwest Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics provides medical coverage, athletic training services and assistance for school districts, club and select sports teams, colleges such as Baylor, and many of the highly visible and attended sports competitions in Central Texas.
Servicing a population covering over 80 miles of Waco, the footprint of SWSMO is large and takes a very dedicated team of physicians and athletic trainers. They provide the thousands of athletes in this radius with the highest level of care that the community has come to expect from SWSMO.
The team at Southwest Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics utilizes cutting-edge techniques to enhance injury prevention and recovery of orthopedic injuries.
As part of Baylor Scott & White Health, Southwest Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics has access to specialist and resources of Texas’ largest not-for-profit health care system.
In March of 2020, Southwest Sports Medicine moved their operations into the new, state of the art Ted and Sue Getterman Sports Medicine and Orthopedic building on Baylor Scott & White-Hillcrest campus. The 106,000 square foot facility includes 48 patient exam rooms; advanced diagnostic imaging including MRI; an orthopedic surgery center; and a sports medicine rehabilitation center with indoor and outdoor sports performance areas.
Dr. Ellis quotes on the new facility, “Our vision is to develop an operation that thrives on building relationships with athletic trainers and coaches to establish state-of-the-art sports medicine. God has blessed us beyond our expectations, and the culmination of these blessings is our relationship with Baylor Scott & White and their vote of confidence to partner with us on this endeavor.”
