Mission & History

The mission of Southwest Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics (SWSMO) is to provide the highest quality of both surgical and non-surgical care for the injured athlete and active adults.

Southwest Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics was founded in 2003 by Jon M. Ellis, M.D. The practice was started with the goal of providing advanced treatment of sports related injuries to all levels of athletes in the Central Texas area.

In the fall of 2005, David E. Haynes, M.D., a board certified sports medicine orthopaedic surgeon, joined the practice after completing a fellowship in sports medicine at the Cleveland Clinic.

In January of 2007, Dr. Chris Miars joined the practice along with Dr. Corbett Boone in August of 2009, both primary care sports medicine specialists. They allow Southwest Sports Medicine to offer comprehensive sport medicine care; this includes services such as concussion management, pulmonary function testing, and exercise induced asthma diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Miars and Dr. Boone are also trained in musculoskeletal ultrasound that provides improved in-office diagnostic capabilities as well as minimally invasive office treatments.

In November of 2009 Southwest Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics joined with Baylor University to become the Team Physicians for Baylor Athletics.

In February of 2012 SWSMO welcomed Dr. Juan J. Rodrigo, a specialist in the treatment of arthritis and recognized as a specialist in total joint reconstruction, establishing the Arthritis Clinic of Southwest Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics.

Dr. E. Garrison Benton, Jr. joined Dr. Rodrigo in August of 2013 with a specialization in treating chronic hip and knee pain. In addition to primary hip and knee arthroplasty, Dr. Benton is fellowship trained in the treatment of complex problems related to previous hip and knee surgery. These problems could include a revision of worn out or painful previous hip and knee replacements and conversion of previous fracture surgery to joint replacement.

In February of 2013 SWSMO welcomed Hand, Wrist, & Elbow specialist Dr. Scott E. Hecox to the practice after completing his fellowship at The Hand Center of San Antonio.

Dr. Keith T. Ellison also moved his practice to Central Texas shortly after finishing his orthopaedic residency at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Dr. Ellison specializes in General Orthopaedic Surgery and holds satellite clinics weekly at Limestone Medical center and at the Family Practice Rural Healthy Clinic in Hamilton, TX.

The summer of 2014 brought with it a very talented and accomplished Foot & Ankle specialist from South Carolina, Dr. Paul Bednarz and with him, 14 years of orthopaedic experience. His specialties include all areas of foot and ankle reconstruction and traumatic repair to include sports injuries, bunions, toe deformities, arthritis, tendinitis, fusions, joint replacement and complex osteotomies.

In August of 2015 SWSMO welcomed another member to the team as Dr. Bradley Gilliam of China Spring joined the practice. A native of China Spring, Texas, Dr. Gilliam returned to the Central Texas area after completing a one year sports medicine fellowship under the direction of Drs. James Andrews, E. Lyle Cain, Jeffrey Dugas, and Benton Emblom at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama. His specialties include shoulder surgeries such as rotator cuff repairs, labral repairs, instability correction, and AC joint reconstructions; elbow surgeries such as elbow arthroscopy, ligament reconstructions (Tommy John surgery), distal biceps repair, and tennis elbow release; knee surgeries such as ligament reconstructions (ACL, PCL, MCL, posterolateral corner), meniscus surgery, and patella instability reconstructions; and hip arthroscopy to treat labral tears, impingement, and snapping hip syndromes.
